Sergeant George Barkley – 802

George Barkley was born in 1890 in Victoria, Australia and enlisted in Brisbane, Qld in February 1915. During his service George Barkley was a member of the 25th Battalion and was promoted to the rank of Sergeant and also received the Military Medal. He was later killed in action in June 1918.

Birth: Born in Ensay, Vic Australia in 1890 to Ellen (aka Helen) and John Duffin Barkley. He had three brothers – Elmo, Ronald and W Barkley.

Religion and Occupation: Presbyterian Labourer.

Enlistment: Joined on the 9th of February, 1915 in Brisbane, Qld.

Embarkation: Departed Brisbane on 29th of June 1915 on the HMAT Aeneas A60.

Service Details:

  • Private 9/2/15 – 10/11/16 joined D Company, 25th Battalion, 7th Brigade, A.I.F.
  • Promoted Corporal 10/11/16 – 13/7/17 25th Battalion, 7th Brigade, A.I.F.
  • Promoted Sergeant 13/7/17 – 10/6/18 25th Battalion, 7th Brigade, A.I.F.
  • Killed in action on 10/6/18

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal, 1914/15 Medal

  • Also received Military Medal on 13th of July, 1917.

Wounds and Sickness:

  • Wounded in action with gun shot wound to left hand on 14/11/16
  • Trench Fever 20/6/17 – 1/7/17 with 7th Australian Field Ambulance
  • Severe Suffocation Gas Poison – 29/10/17

Death: Killed in action on the 10th of June 1918.

Burial: Buried in Beacon Cemetery in the Somme, France. Grave reference: III. D. 3.
