Sergeant Roy Alexander Moorehead Hagar – 3840

Birth: Roy Alexander Moorehead Hagar was born in 1895 in Wanganui, New Zealand to Elizabeth Agnes Lillian Sharp and James Arthur Hagar. He also had a brother, Arthur.

Religion and Occupation: Methodist Photographer

Enlistment: Roy joined up in Melbourne, Victoria on the 19th of July, 1915.

Embarkation: He left Melbourne on the 23rd of November 1915 on the HMAT Ceramic A40.

  • Promoted Lance Corporal 4/5/16 – 1/8/16 5th Battalion, 1st A.I.F. Division
  • Lieutenant Sergeant 8/10/16 – 11/9/17 5th Battalion, 1st A.I.F. Division
  • Sergeant 11/9/17 – 10/8/18 5th Battalion, 1st A.I.F. Division
  • Killed in Action on 10/8/18

Medals: 1914/15 Star, Victory Medal, British War Medal

  • He also received the Military Medal in October 1917.

Wounds:

  • Head Wounded in Action – 20/8/16 to 20/9/16
  • Gun Shot Wound on Head and Cheek 22/9/17 to 19/12/17

Death: Roy was killed in action on the 10th of August 1918 in Lihons, France after leading the 5th Platoon into battle, where Sergeant Hagar was shot through the head and killed instantly. He was buried in Rosieres Communal Cemetery Extension at II. A. 2.
